Health officials on Friday reported 21 new cases of COVID-19 on Hawaii Island, bringing the total number of cases to 1,375.
The Hawaii Island cases were among 122 new COVID-19 cases announced across the state. The remainder of the cases were on Oahu, which reported 87 positive results, Maui seven, and Kauai one. Six residents were also diagnosed with the virus while outside the state.
Statewide, 69 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized Thursday, including 10 on Hawaii Island. According to Kona Community Hospital’s Friday afternoon update, five patients were hospitalized at the facility with two in the intensive care unit and four in the “med surg” acute car unit. One COVID-19 patients required the use of a ventillator.
No new coronavirus-related deaths were announced by the state on Friday. Of the 219 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date, 170 were on Oahu, 17 were on Maui, one on Lanai, 31 were on Hawaii Island and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
Hawaii County Civil Civil Defense also reported no new deaths, leaving the total number of fatalities on Hawaii Island to 48. Twenty-seven of the deaths were among residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo and four were at Kona Community Hospital. The state has yet to confirm 17 of the deaths reported to date on Hawaii Island.
